India has about 40 crore menstruating women of which about 10 crore are adolescent girls age
10-19 years. India tops the countries in the world with respect to adolescent population. The
number of adolescent girls in India is much more than the total population of many European
countries i.e. United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc.
Adolescence in girls is a period where they blossom with a feeling to enter the beautiful
process of womanhood about which every girl should be proud of. Adolescence is a critical
moment in a girl‟s life for transition to adulthood. Adolescent girls‟ have multifaceted needs
and aspirations to lead lives of dignity and build for better tomorrow.
This is the period where they experience physiological and emotional changes. This is the time
when they hit puberty, attain menarche and start menstruating. Although, menstruation is
normal for girls and a fact of life, yet many women are uncomfortable discussing this in open.
The issues related to menstruation are too often avoided or not discussed freely, thus, becomes
a hush-hush matter.
On the other hand, there are many taboos and misconceptions attached to menstruation which
alienate and isolate adolescent girls during days of period with the notion that having period
will make them dirty and unhygienic. Thus, girls feel ashamed and face serious barriers to
manage their periods. Often, they miss school and productive work days and fall behind their
male counterparts. There have been reports in leading newspapers relating to instances of
suicides and shaming by adolescent girls due to lack of information/ knowledge about periods.
In recognition of the importance of menstrual hygiene, the Government of India in 2015
initiated Menstrual Hygiene Management programme which is laudable. Since the program is
at the infancy stage, it was considered appropriate to assess the ground realities in the
implementation of the scheme and obtain feedback from all stakeholders in improving the
programme.
In view of this, Invision has suo-moto undertaken a focused cross-sectional study on Menstrual
Hygiene Management among adolescent school girls from semi-urban area of Kalka, District
Panchkula, Haryana, urban areas of Delhi. The study also covered slum areas in Delhi with
focus on out-of-school adolescent girls. The study involved face to face interviews of school
going girls and out of school girls, interaction with school nodal teachers / counsellors as well
as ground level workers such as ASHA‟s and Anganwadi Workers.
The reports has been finalised and is ready to be shared with stakeholders.
